Signs of a Backsliding Worker in the Church

Signs of a Backsliding Worker in the Church

Text: Luke 9:57-62

In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus speaks plainly about the cost of discipleship. He calls for unwavering dedication,no turning back, no divided loyalty. This passage challenges anyone serving in the church to remain fully committed. But what does it look like when a church worker begins to backslide? Here are some clear warning signs:

1. Loss of Passion for Spiritual Things

Passion is the heartbeat of spiritual growth. When a church worker loses interest in prayer, worship, the Word, and fellowship, it’s a serious sign. What was once a delight becomes a chore. Jesus addresses this in Revelation 2:4-5, calling us to return to our first love. A cold spiritual life is often the first symptom of deeper issues.

2. Loss of Zeal for Quality Service (2 Kings 10:16)

In 2 Kings 10:16, Jehu declares, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” Quality service in the church flows from deep commitment. A backsliding worker begins to serve carelessly, with declining enthusiasm and excellence. The vibrant joy once felt in serving turns into dry routine or avoidance.

3. Loss of Desire for Fresh Encounters with God

A healthy spiritual life longs for deeper, ongoing experiences with God. But a backsliding church worker becomes content with past encounters. There’s no longer a hunger for God’s presence, revelation, or power. The spiritual life becomes predictable, dry, and unchallenging.

4. Loss of Zeal for Spiritual Stewardship

God entrusts His people with time, gifts, influence, and responsibilities within the church. A backsliding worker becomes disengaged, missing responsibilities, neglecting commitments, and treating sacred tasks casually. The sense of privilege and honor in serving fades into indifference.

5. Loss of Grace for Followership

Jesus said in Luke 9:62: “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Followership means yielding to leadership, staying submitted, and remaining faithful even when it’s difficult. When a worker starts resisting direction, avoids accountability, or isolates from the body, it’s a clear warning sign.

Conclusion:
Backsliding is subtle,it often begins unnoticed. But God, in His mercy, always offers a way back. If you notice these signs in yourself or others in your church, don’t ignore them. Return to the source. Rekindle your fire. God still desires to use you powerfully in His house.

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the works you did at first.” – Revelation 2:5
