Jeremiah 13:15–18
“Listen and pay attention! Don’t be proud, for the Lord has spoken.” – Jeremiah 13:15 (NLT)
Let’s be real—none of us like being told we’re wrong. Whether it’s a parent, a teacher, or even a friend calling us out, it can sting. But that’s exactly what God is doing in this part of the Bible. Through the prophet Jeremiah, He’s telling His people: “Stop being proud and listen to Me.”
Why? Because pride blocks us from hearing God.
Pride says, “I’ve got this. I don’t need help.”
Humility says, “God, I need You. Show me the way.”
In Jeremiah 13:15–18, God’s people were doing their own thing, ignoring Him, thinking they were good without Him. And God warns them: If you keep going this way, things will get dark. Not just “bad day” dark—but “no way out” dark.
Here’s the truth:
When we’re too proud to admit we’re wrong or ask for help, we start to drift from God. But He doesn’t want that. He wants us close. That’s why He sent Jeremiah to speak up.
And it wasn’t easy. In verse 17, Jeremiah says, “I will weep in secret because of your pride.” He was heartbroken because the people just wouldn’t listen.
Even leaders aren’t off the hook.
In verse 18, God tells the king and queen to “come down from your thrones.” Translation? No one’s too important to humble themselves. God sees us all the same—and He lifts up those who bow down to Him.
So what can we do?
- Check your heart. Are you open to correction, or quick to get defensive?
- Ask God to help you stay humble—even when you’re right.
- Surround yourself with people who speak truth in love.
Pride pushes God away. Humility brings Him close.
Let’s choose to listen, let go of our pride, and follow where God leads.
